JSU star Garrison Johnson named SWAC Player of the Year

The Southwestern Athletic Conference announced its 2009-10 Men’s Basketball All-Conference Honors with Jackson State’s Garrison Johnson voted as the Player of the Year and Tyrone Hanson was named the Newcomer of the Year.

Honors were voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information departments, and selected members of the media.

Johnson, a 6-5, 190-pound senior from Smyrna GA, led the SWAC in scoring (17.3 ppg), was eighth in both free throw percentage (73.2) and three-point free throw percentage (34.8), fourth in three¡¯s made per game (2.2), and third in minutes played (33.5/gm). He posted a pair of double-double games, and had a conference-high 12 20-point games, including a season-high 30 points vs. Mississippi Valley St. Jan. 30.

Hanson (6-7, 200, SR, Brooklyn, NY), averaged 11.5 points, and 4.7 rebounds for the Tigers. He had 16 double-figure games this season, highlighted by a 23-point effort vs. Spring Hill on Dec. 30.

The duo joins an impressive list of Tigers that have won the conference honors. Former JSU great Lindsey Hunter was named the 1992-93 SWAC Player of the Year, Tim Henderson was named the 2001-02 Newcomer of the Year and Trey Johnson was named the 2006-07 Player of the Year.

Garrison Johnson was also an All-SWAC first team selection and Tyrone Hanson received second team honors. De’Suan Dixon received third team honors.

JSU star Garrison Johnson wins HSRN National Player of the Week for the second time

JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State senior guard Garrison Johnson has been named the Heritage Sports Radio Network’s National Player of the Week. This is his second time he has won the award this season. Last week Johnson led the Tigers to two straight wins, averaging 23.5 points and 9.5 rebounds. His top performance of the week was a double-double (25 points and 11 rebounds) in their 63-51 win over Mississippi Valley State. Johnson finished with 75 votes in the voting this week. This is the final Fan Poll winners for the 2010 basketball season. The Player of the Year Fan Poll nominees will be released next week.
