One University Place opens next to JSU campus

The largest private real estate development west Jackson has seen in 30 years has recently opened just steps away from the campus of Jackson State University.
Called One University Place, the $18 million building includes 78 luxury apartments above 22,000 square feet of prime retail space on the corner of Dalton and John R. Lynch streets. Residents began moving into the one- and two-bedroom apartments in mid-September, and the first commercial space has been leased to a dry cleaning business. Other retailers expected to come include a day spa, a print shop, a Greek apparel store, an art gallery, a bakery/coffee shop and other restaurant offerings.
“One University Place is the next major step in the west Jackson renaissance,” said Kimberly Hilliard, director of JSU’s Center for University-Based Development, which has been instrumental in launching the development.

To celebrate the opening of this major west Jackson development, local and state leaders will gather with Jackson State officials at One University Place for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15.
The space, which compliments JSU’s architecture, was designed using new urbanist and green design principals. Residents enjoy easy access to the intellectual and cultural life of Jackson State University, including live theater and sporting events, and discounts at the campus book store, dining facility and fitness center.
“This is the best offering for close to downtown living,” said project manager Tim McCarty of UniDev LLC. “It has the most amenities immediately available.”
To help boost the building’s profile, new residents are being offered $200 off their first month rent.
The opening of the building marks the completion of phase one of the University Place of Jackson development, which is expected to transform and connect the 50-acre community between JSU’s campus and downtown Jackson. Upon completion, the $150 million development area will include 300 for-sale homes and 50,000 square feet of retail space.

  1. Juacksonian’s and other supporters of JSU should not have to reminded that we shold express a spirit of thanks to the new development being constructed around Jackson State University. In my opinion, it’s decades late and frankly not enough… We are Jackson State University… We should hold ourselves accountable and apply pressure on those who are able to make Jackson the Premier it rightfully deserves……. Yoy do know that that the NCAA is chomping t the bit to hold majoe tournaments…….NEWS FLASH…. Not only will we the State of Mississippi chanf it’s fals… they won’t even modify it…… That’s the only reason they won’t come…. That is so selfish Jackson…and yet, some complain about parking…… Until you know the significance Of Jstate, pls don’t complain

  2. The area looks GREAT! It has ample parking space specific to the building. Also, how could you expect to see “New York City’s Soho, or D.C.‘s ultra trendy Georgetown” with one development? For those of you who are not smart enough to know that although it is not there now, but hopefully one building will turn into more, should really keep your negative comments to yourself. It’s so hard for Jackson and Jackson State University to move forward because of negative attitudes. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will the “New Jackson”. True enough, we do need extra parking, but it is really because the students who live on campus are taking parking spaces away from commuters and visitors. I believe that new rules for parking should be implemented to make the lots availible only for commuters and visitors since commuters and visitors are not allowed to park in “on campus” spots. This would really help the congestion.

  3. It is great that JSU is making awesome developments to west Jackson. The concern I have is the parking that is available on Dalton St. The parking situation is goingto keep a lot of consumers from visiting One University Place and the Student Center. I know personally that I very seldomly visit the Student Center unless I really truly have to because of the parking. There are visitor parking spaces across from the Student Center but Campus Police will have them brocked off / reserved for other people; so why not just make all the spaces reserved? The next development should really be a parking garage for people visiting One University Place / Student Center. Can we get JSU to work on that?

  4. Its going to take more than one building to make Washington Addition/Gomer, MS look like Soho or Georgetown. Enough with the EXAGGERATED advertisement! The new building is a good look, a great look, and the development of building homes and businesses along the parkway to downtown is going to do wonders for the development and security and future of South/West Jackson. But a lone coffeeshop does not a Soho make. At best, development may make that stretch of Campus periphery resemble the a modern edition of the Fondren District out State Street.

  5. I lived on campus during my undergraduate years. I am now a grad student who is LOVING North Jackson, and I must say that this apartment complex/projected shopping center/Living community is going to do much to help recruitment at JSU. I almost didn’t go here because off-campus housing opportunities close to campus were HORRIBLE compared to other campuses I’d visited (i.e. Ole Miss in Oxford, MS. They offer two bedroom luxury apartments for 425/month to students withing walking distance of the campus that have twice the living space of the Palisades! AND NO ROACHES) One University Place’s apartment costs are going to be prohibitive to some, but at least it makes campus look better.

  7. One University Place is a very beautiful building. Will this building be for the students of Jackson State only, or for any resident of the City of Jackson as well? How do I find out the cost to rent one of these apartments?

  8. We have really come a long ways. Go J-State . I can’t wait to see the whole outcome of this university. We are moving on up.

  9. It has been a long time coming but I knew a change would come. I am extremely excited about all the developments going on inside, outside, and around the campus. We are finally beginning to look like The # 1 Historically Black Institution. Thank God for progress!!!

  10. I was very excited when it was said to be an building for businesses and apartments…but I was very disappointed when I was told the $$prices$$ for the apartments. I’m a single mom and my children are all out of the house and I wanted to find something different and nice. I guess I will have to look further. I can’t afford here. Are there any discounts for students?

  11. I was so pleased to hear that a new apt complex was coming downtown that i quickly looked up the address and drove to the location. However, I do not know who does the advertising for this apt complex because clearly this place is not downtown. Totally west Jxn. I think the place is very lovely and will bring so much business to JSU, but it is just not downtown. I live downtown and I believe that this location is minutes away from downtown, just not there. Also, if you are in the market for “New York City’s Soho, or D.C.‘s ultra trendy Georgetown” you will be highly disappointed. They told me that I would feel like Sara Jessica Parker in Sex in the City by living downtown and I have been here for 9 months and it does not feel like New York yet. But its coming. We just have to support it and one day Jxn will be awesome. So just lay it out there. This apt is in WEST JXN and has the potential to feel like you are in New York or DC.

  12. @jasmine The building is privately owned and is an effort to rebuild west/downntown jxn…… Nice look JSU!! We are really taking steps to make our university better on all levels.

  13. I’m am so glad JSU is coming along well with the housing development area. It is truly a remarkable building and it compliments the campus so well. Thanks to JSU and staff for all your hard work! God Bless
