Louis Farrakhan, Shirley Sherrod, Myrlie Evers Williams, guests at Veterans of the Miss. Civil Rights Movement Conf.

Louis Farrakhan

The Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement at Jackson State University will host a three-day conference featuring Minister Louis Farrakhan, Shirley Sherrod and Myrlie Evers Williams on its 1400 John R. Lynch St. campus March 23-26.

The sixth annual conference, themed “Too Much Reform and Not Enough Change. NEEDED: A New Grassroots Movement for Change in EDUCATION,” is designed to inspire and empower youth through social activism education. Topics include: “The Threat to Free Speech,” “Cradle to Prison Pipeline,” and “Islamophobia and Religious Intolerance.”

Now one of the largest annual gatherings of civil rights veterans in the country, this event brings together civil rights activists, historians, students, community organizers, educators, filmmakers and producers, second generation activists, grassroots organizations and hundreds of others from across the United States and abroad with today’s youth to discuss ways to continue positive change in society.

Among the special guests confirmed this year are Minister Louis Farrakhan, leader of the Chicago-based Nation of Islam; Shirley Sherrod, former Georgia State Director of Rural Development for the U.S. Department of Agriculture; Myrlie Evers Williams, former NAACP chairman and widow of Medgar Evers; Marion Barry, Washington D.C. councilman; Kathleen Cleaver, Yale professor and former Black Panther; Haki Madhubuti, author and poet; and Karima Al-Amin, community activist.

Farrakhan will be the keynote speaker for the Veterans Freedom Gathering at 7 p.m., Friday, March 25, at the JSU Rose Embly McCoy Auditorium. Sherrod will be the keynote luncheon speaker for the Veterans Activist Luncheon at noon, Saturday, March 26, at the JSU Student Center. Evers-Williams will speak at the Intergenerational Cultural Expression Night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 26, also at the Student Center.

Having begun in 2004 with small gatherings, the Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement became an official arm of Jackson State in 2008. In addition to collecting and archiving oral histories of civil rights veterans across the country, the Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement supports persons actively using those stories to continue the pursuit of freedom, justice and equality.

“We are trying to be true to our reason for being,” said Owen Brooks, executive director for the organization. “This conference, like others, will allow an exchange of ideas and to engage participants in discussions regarding issues that are important to them.”

Admission to the conference, which begins on Thursday, March 24, is $100 for adults and includes admission to all events. College student registration is $25. High school student registration is $10. Prices include all events except the Veterans Freedom Gathering featuring Minister Farrakhan, which will cost $10 with a student ID. The registration fee includes a one-year membership to the Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement.

  1. One thing that I do believe is that if you’re going to speak a language, speak and write it well. Please work on your grammar.

Now many of the multutude of people who left Egypt in the old story were black. Many Jews are black in color. The Jewish people were evicted from the land of Israel many times during the last 3000 years. Some went south to Africa, while others ended up in other countries along the Mediterranean. They continued to be killed or thrown out of other countries. Intermarriage was not uncommon as they moved toward eastern Europe. Darker skinned Jews married lighter skinned people and vice-versa.

Our republic of the United States is very young in comparison to the history of the Jews. My grandparents came here from Eastern Europe to escape the “pogrom” which was another attack on the Jews preceding the Holocaust in Germany. I was raised in the southern United States.

I am appalled at what I have seen in my short time on this earth. I am even more appalled at what I have read on this blog. As a teenager I fought for civil rights. What I had in mind was civil rights for everyone – inclusively. Louey Farrakhan does not embody that inclusive right to free thought. He is not a proper speaker for this event.

A universty campus is a place for free and open discussion. I’m not clear on how we can have a free and open discussion with a man who has his army of bowtied henchmen surrounding him.

    • Evidently there are more than two persons using anonymous contributions. I will try to use correct grammar. But, I have to be aware that no matter how I say it you probably won’t interpret as it is intended.
I too was and still am in the civil rights struggle. I remember bomb threats to our home, when people were actually bombing our homes and churches. I remember the jewish people who helped in the struggle. I remember that we didnt have discussions about this because we remembered that the Klan hated Jews, Catholics, and Blacks, in that order. The jewish community of that day understood that they were next as a community. but at that time, The racists saw us as the same. If Farrakahan said that we should turn on our jewish brothers, I’m sure that he would be booed and the place may empty.
As I said earlier, Some blacks have sold other blacks into slavery and afterward, Some claiming to be muslims, and some claiming to be Jewish have also. Lets focus on the positive ones in society. Because if we do we will speed up the day where they will show themselves because of the evil in their hearts. I know the people in Meridian, who fed Schwerner, Goodman , and Chaney before they left for Philadelphia, So I have been in the struggle a long time, and I appreciate our Jewish brothers and sisters. Because no matter what anyone one says, by letter or speech, Not all jews, muslims, or Christians are bad.

  2. Oh yeah, I am a supporter of the ADL and do not support hate speech. The only way for those who manipulate and exploit others to continue is to keep us at one another. I know Min. Farrakhan has made abrasive comments before. and his enemies know the influence and concerns of the Jewish community. For the enemies of both blacks and Jews, It would be ideal to use us to destroy each other. If we use all our strength to fight each other , They have a easier job against us both. Blacks and the Jewish community’s safety are tied. Nationally and Internationally. Because when they finish with one group they’ll come for the other one. The same evil that the Nazi’s used.

  3. Wow!!! What I proved was that now matter what is said or done Most of the time It will be interpreted however a person wants to. If a person invests in a Mutual Fund, They really never know what exactly the companies represented by that mutual fund are doing. You say no jews were involved in the slave trade. That tells me that is no use discussing anything with you furthur. Just about anyone. You missed a great deal of what was said in this discussion.
I wish you well. I will be at Min. Farrakhans speech and My sons.

    • do not entertain uneducated, refusing to read and focus on truth, jackbutts like this character. let him say what he want to say. ignorance is bliss. it is a waste of time, once you have explained to him over and over. he want to believe what he want, let him wallow in it. Black people here and abroad are the Champions of Faith and God, who traveled 9,000 miles to free our mind from injustice, no freedom, and a non-equality mindset here and abroad. Although Black People are the Chosen people of God and are children of the Most High God (making us young gods/goddesses in training). To Thou Own Self Be True. Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Zoroastrian, etc., whatever we go by, submitting ourselves to the Will of God and walking in his steps, his words, his light, and his manners give us degrees above the rest, but we never put over on others, that we’re better. Freedom, Justice and Equality are the judgments of God to the liars and deceivers of this world. Place that person or people on ignore, let him write until his heart is content. peace.

  5. I will find the sites, but you can read about Farrakhan’s murder of Malcolm X anywhere. BTW, no Jews participated in slave trade.

  6. Yes, Anonymous, clumping everybody together because of race IS wrong, which is why we protest to Farrakhan’s presence, because he regularly clumps all Jews or Whites together and labels them as Satan or evil.

Thank you for proving the point that Farrakhan is wrong. I hope you will have the courage of your convictions to hold him accountable, rather than defend his wrongdoing.

  7. Minister Farrakhan’s February 27 keynote address featured a range of conspiratorial messages about Jews and Zionists, including accusing Jews and Israel of trying to push the U.S. into a war with Iran, blaming Jews for killing Jesus, and claiming that Jews were responsible for Black suffering through history.

The NOI convention’s opening plenary session, titled “The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews,” sought to demonstrate disproportionate Jewish involvement in the slave trade and to blame Jews for Black suffering ever since. Speakers accused Jews of controlling the media and called for the NOI’s anti-Semitic books to be taught in schools nationwide.

“Anti-Semitism has suffused the Nation of Islam’s message, and Farrakhan is the standard bearer and bigot in chief,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “For the past two years he has put anti-Semitism front and center on the agenda, so that it is now a drumbeat heard across the organization. And perhaps what’s more disturbing is that despite his anti-Semitic rants, he has not been made a pariah in his own community. What does it take for him to stop being a pied piper of hatred?”

Farrakhan, who has a long history of anti-Semitic and racist statements, addressed the Nation of Islam’s 2011 Saviours’ Day convention at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. Included among his conspiratorial messages was the allegation that “Zionists” are goading the United States into “a military offensive against Libya,” whose leader, Muammar Qaddafi, he praised as “my brother” and “my friend.”

“At a time when Qaddafi is engaged in a brutal and violent crackdown against his own people, it is shocking to hear Farrakhan praising him,” said Mr. Foxman. “Qaddafi’s actions against his own people are indefensible, and yet Farrakhan defends him.”

Additional excerpts from Farrakhan’s Saviours’ Day address:

    · “President Obama, if you allow the Zionists to push you, to mount a military offensive against Qaddafi and you go in and kill him and his sons as you did with Saddam Hussein and his sons, I’m warning you this is a Libyan problem, let the Libyans solve their problem among themselves.”

    · Farrakhan accused American Zionists and Israel of trying to push the U.S. into a war with Iran and charged that, “Zionists dominate the government of the United States of America and her banking system.”

    · “Some of you think that I’m just somebody who’s got something out for the Jewish people. You’re stupid. Do you think I would waste my time if I did not think it was important for you to know Satan? My job is to pull the cover off of Satan so that he will never deceive you and the people of the world again.”

Do you agree with his words?

    • No not all of it. The Arabs were the early commercial slave traders. Many of whom were Muslims or claimed to be, Just like someone who claimed to be Jewish could do evil things. Baptists do wrong, Catholics , Methodists, Some of the Jews(or people who claimed to be) did promote the slave trade. They were not exclusive

        • You must be pretty young. Prove what? I guess you say that there was no holocaust, or that there was no slavery at all. Study it yourself, Read it’s all there. Just becasuse a person claims a faith doesnt mean they are devoted to it. LIke the people today that have businesses and join churches to add to their customer base. You can’t indict everyone in a Muslim, Jewish, or Christian faith because of what some of the evil members do.

        • No I don’t agree 100% with what Min. Farrakhan says.
partly because sometime he does’nt be specific when in the flow of his speech. I don’t agree 100% with what Obama says either, What does that prove? I did’nt agree 100% with what Dr. Martin Luther King said. Most but not all. Are you demanding of all public figures to say everything that you agree with? or is it just Min. Farrakhan?

        • The answer was in my initial statement. I believe that evil follows good around. to undo whatever progress had been made. You can’t group everybody in a race into a
stereotype. I haver never robbed anyone. abandoned my children, stole cars, been a pimp or drug dealer. Some people however think that all black men are in the same category. Things that have happened in the past are facts. Sometime they are ugly but Clumping everybody together because of race or origin is conjecture and wrong.

    • Anti means – anti (an′tī′, -tē)
      oun pl. antis -·tis′
Informal a person opposed to some policy, proposal, action, etc.

      Semitic – adjective
designating or of the Semites or their languages or cultures
Origin: Ger semitisch < ModL Semiticus < Semita: see Semite
      noun
a major subfamily of the Afroasiatic family of languages, including Akkadian, Canaanite, Aramaic, Hebrew, and Ethiopic

….in other words, to be Anti-Semitic, means to be Anti Black. Are Jewish people Black? The ones of 750 A.D. (you) Let us have a peek. "ests have shown, that the Jews that are coming from Eastern Europe and Russia have no connection at all to the Israelites. In fact, they are from the old Khazarist empire, and other places. Whom did not become Jews till about 750 AD.

My question is this…If over 90% of those making up the Nation of Israel now, are as DNA says not real Jews (from the tribe of Judah of the Org.12), have we not done Satans work as we were warned by John in Rev.2:9 and 3:9, by making the nation in 1948?" (gracethrufaith.com)

I know that the truth hurt and any person or people who find your original truth of your origins, you come with well dress lies posing them as truths. The Children of Israel are not Jewish, never were. Some Jewish people, saw our silky, gold threaded clothes, put them on and have posed as Black people, The People of God (Chosen Ones) for 1261 years.

      • Wow, this is seriously sad.

Anti-Semitic does not mean to be Anti-Black. It’s like saying someone who knits is a crafty person, because knitting is a craft. No, crafty means to be sly or devious.

Secondly, your DNA statement is false.

^ G.Atzmon, L.Hao, I.Pe’er, C.Velez, A.Pearlman, P.F.Palamara, B.Morrow, E.Friedman, C.Oddoux, E.Burns and H.Ostrer. Abraham’s Children in the Genome Era: Major Jewish Diaspora Populations Comprise Distinct Genetic Clusters with Shared Middle Eastern Ancestry. The American Journal of Human Genetics, 03 June 2010.

Go read the genetic linking of Jewish communities to the Middle East.

And now you are saying that Jews are imposters. No wonder you follow a hateful, parasitic religious leader like Farrakhan. His lies and vitriol is music to your ears.

Seriously, you are deluded. Go read a professional genetics publication about Jewish heritage, and take a class in etymology before you continue with this laughable, BS. You are only making yourself look stupid.

    • ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH HIS WORDS, HE JUST LEFT OUT THE ARABS and the INTERNATIONAL BANKERS(THEIR CALLED FEDERAL RESERVE BANK)

    • All evil is Satanic! Crucifying Christ was satanic, Selling people into slavery was satanic, Discriminating against other races is satanic. Murdering and taking the lands or the native americans was satanic.
No race or person has not done or been satanic at some time in their existence except Jesus. Maybe you and the people you call jews are on the same Holiness level.

      • So you are saying that the Jews sold slaves, crucified Christ, murdered and took the lands of the Native Americans, and discriminate against other races. I suppose not all of the above. But wait! Mr. Farrakhan says they did – he discriminates against Jews, he discriminates against the white man, he incites murder. Is this the message you would like for Jackson State to send?

        • READ!!! I was being rhetorical. Some of the Jewish people did sell slaves, Just like some of the Muslims, Some of the Christians, Some of the Atheists. The Dutch were the biggest slave traders for years.
Some of the Jewish people under the influence of satan DID persecute and crucify Christ
SOME of the Whites did murder and take the property of the native americans and discriminate agains other races.
I have never heard Farrakhan incite murder, and I have listened critically to what he was saying over the years.
I heard Malcolm X say at the time of abuse and murders of blacks by whites. “If a white man put his hand on you, Do your best to make sure that he don’t put his hand on nobody else.”

Give me an example where he incited murder, He has spoken a lot and I will research it. If you remember the speech let me know.

        • Yes the Jews Sold Slaves they were the principals in the Slave trade everyone know this now, White Gentile(NON JEWISH WHITES) had according to their own mouth had ONLY 20% of the slaves in America But the JEWS had the rest, Even DAVID DUKE knows that, youtube DAVID DUKE on Jews and Slavery he just gave a very TRUTHFUL presentation on it regardless of his racial views he still spoke the truth, If is was a KKK speaking the truth regardless if we like their stance if they speak truth, then submit to it..And actually I agree with at least 30% of what the white Aryan Nation propose, and guess what I AM TOTALLY BLACK, BLACK AS NIGHT but I agree with them on those points, why because I a seek truth no matter where is comes from…

        • Interesting comment from the Truth. . .

Exactly what did the Jewish citizenry do with these slaves? Did they use them to pull their peddlar’s carts? I suppose you would maintain that they had some land? Pure insanity.

    • What do you mean by still? Do you even know me?

Your comments are juvenile and rooted in ignorance and are entirely non-germane to the topic.

Farrakhan is a horrible person to host, and his presence will only tarnish JSU’s reputation.

      • You are Exactly the type of person that we don’t need. Tearing down someone who speaks the truth. Regardless of the fact that the pot smoking, sagging pants, unsupportive, animalistic, undignified, morally challenged people don’t need to be encouraged to do and be better.

      • While, the Minister is not Christ, You do fit the Judas mentality David. You seem to be the type of person who would talk about the problems in our community, and then put down anybody who makes efforts to help.
Words like horrible and tarnish.. It’s your mind that is horrible and tarnished.

        • Judas was a follower of Christ and betrayed him. I am not a follower of Farrakhan and I am not betraying him by holding him accountable for his hateful, racist statements against Jews, and his support of the violent dictatorship in Zimbabwe, so your accusations are without merit.

        • READ! I wrote ” While, the Minister is not Christ, You do fit the Judas mentality” Some people talk about ideas, Some people talk about other people. As I person I don’t know you, but I know what you expressed in your comments.

        • So, you are saying that you don’t know me, but you do know that I don’t do anything. Wow, no wonder your rants make no sense.

Also, there is nothing wrong with criticizing a racist, bigoted, dictator-supporting, parasite, religious leader.

I’ll be ready to listen to the nice things he has to say, once he publicly apologizes for his hateful ways.
